
Inventory: The first step towards working safely with hazardous substances
On April 28th, we observe the World Day for Safety and Health at Work — a moment to highlight the importance of safe and healthy working environments worldwide. In the Netherlands, the Netherlands Labour Authority plays a central role in ensuring workplace safety. They follow a clear four-step approach when it comes to hazardous substances: Inventory, Assess, Take Measures, and Safeguard. In this article, we focus on the first step: Inventory.

Why inventory is important
Creating an inventory of hazardous substances is the foundation of safe working practices. It’s not just a legal obligation — it’s also a moral responsibility to protect employees. According to the Labour Inspectorate, thorough inventory is essential for ensuring the safety of workers.
So, what does this mean in practice? Every substance that is present, produced, or released during work activities must be carefully documented. Without this first step, it's impossible to take appropriate safety measures or effectively manage risks.
